Geographical Indication and Traditional Speciality

The EU has three systems to promote and protect the names of quality agricultural and food products: PDO (Protected Designation of Origin, DOP in Spanish), PGI (Protected Geographical Indication, IGP in Spanish) and TSG (Traditional Speciality Guaranteed, ETG in Spanish).

These systems are intended to promote the diversification of agricultural production, to protect product names against unauthorized use and imitation and to help consumers by informing them about the specific characteristics of products:

3

PDO - identifies agricultural products and foodstuffs produced, processed and prepared in a given geographical area, using recognized know-how and skills.

4

PGI – identifies agricultural and food products that have a close relationship with a geographical area in which at least one of the stages of production, processing or development of the product takes place.

5

TSG - highlights the traditional characteristics of a product either in its composition or production process.
